The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced India’s squads for the upcoming one-off Test and three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, with Shubman Gill set to lead the side in both formats.

India will first face Afghanistan in a one-off Test starting June 6 before the two teams clash in a three-match ODI series from June 14 to June 20.

The Test squad features a balanced mix of established stars and emerging talent. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sai Sudharsan and Devdutt Padikkal strengthen the batting unit alongside Rahul and Pant, while Dhruv Jurel has also been included as the reserve wicketkeeper.

India have opted for multiple all-round options in the form of Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy, adding depth to both departments.

The bowling attack will be spearheaded by Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, while spinner Kuldeep Yadav is expected to lead the spin department. Youngsters Manav Suthar, Harsh Dubey and Gurnoor Brar have also earned places in the Test squad.

For the ODI series, senior stars Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Rahul return to the setup, while Ishan Kishan has been included as the wicketkeeping option.

India have picked three all-rounders in the ODI squad – Hardik Pandya, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar – while the pace unit includes Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Prince Yadav and Gurnoor Brar.

Notably, premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah and veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja were not included in either squad.

Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya’s participation in the ODI series remains subject to fitness clearance.

Speaking during the squad announcement press conference, chief selector Ajit Agarkar clarified Jadeja’s absence and confirmed that veteran pacer Mohammed Shami was not considered for selection.

“Ravindra Jadeja is an integral part of the team. He’s rested for the Test match and we are trying to give opportunities to other players. It’s for this Test that we have not picked him,” Agarkar said.

“We have been told that at this point, T20 cricket is what he is ready for, so there was no discussion regarding Mohammed Shami,” he added.

Agarkar also praised rising youngster Vaibhav Sooryavanshi while backing Jaiswal’s performances at the highest level.

“Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has done well, but let’s not forget Yashasvi Jaiswal. As impressive as he is, Jaiswal has done as well. Vaibhav has done well to get to the A team, hope he does well there,” Agarkar stated.
